The following provides a simple guide to installing Fedora 7

Requirements

The process of installing Fedora 7 requires a number of steps:

  1. Boot the machine with the Fedora 7 DVD in the drive. Hopefully the install process should load up and by pressing “Enter“, the install process should begin using a graphical user interface. (If this doesn’t occur, you may have to change your bois boot settings, ie boot order)
  2. The install will ask whether you would like to check the installation media. You may choose to skip this process if you wish.
  3. The install process will load additional drivers that might be required for the installation process. This may take a minute or two.

  4. After a few moments upon loading drivers, you should now be faced with the Welcome screen, click on the “Next” button to continue.
  5. The Language selection screen should be displayed. Select the appropriate language. English (English) was selected in our case. Click on the “Next” button to continue.
  6. The Keyboard selection screen should be displayed. Select the appropriate keyboard. U.S.English was selected in our case. Click on the “Next” button to continue.
  7. The Installation selection screen may be displayed if you have a previous version of Fedora installed. If this is the case, please select the correct installation, though it is recommend that a “clean” install is done, therefore it is recommended that “Install” Fedora” and not upgrade is selected. Click on the “Next” button to continue.

  8. The Disk Partitioning Setup selection screen should now be displayed, select the correct partitioning method.
*. Generally it is best to select “Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout”, as this will delete everything currently on the disk and do a fresh setup. You may wish to backup any data you have before proceeding. If you have information on the drive that you wish not to be deleted, you might want to select “Use free space on selected drives and create default layout” or “Create custom layout”. Once the partitioning method has been selected, hit the “Next” button to continue.
*. A warning box will now appear to inform you that you will lose all your data. Hit the “Yes” button to continue.

    • Click on the “Edit” button to modify network settings.
    • Unselect the “Configure using DHCP” property.
    • Enter the manual IP Address in the location provided.
    • Enter the Net Mask in the location provided. Generally it will be 255.255.255.0
    • Then click on the “Ok” button.
    • Enter Hostname for the Computer
    • Once the above settings have been made, you should be able to enter the Gateway, Primary and Secondary DNS Addresses.
    • Once everything has been entered, hit the “Next” button to continue.
  9. The Network Devices screen should now be displayed. The following is required if you are going to use a static IP Address, as this guide is. If you do not know this or any of the below settings, it is recommended that your ask your network administration team:
  10. The Time Zone selection screen should now be displayed, select the correct time zone to suit, for CQU Rockhampton, we selected “Brisbane”. Then hit the “Next” button to continue.
  11. The Set Root Password screen should now be displayed, enter the root password for the machine, once entered, hit the “Next” button to continue.
  12. The Package selection screen should now be displayed. As a personal recommendation, I generally select the “Customize now” so that addition software can be installed. For the CQU Access Grids, the following additional packages are selected:
    • Desktop Environments
      • KDE (K Desktop Environment)
    • Applications
      • Authoring and Publishing
      • Engineering and Scientific
    • Development
      • Development Libraries
      • Development Tools
      • KDE Software Development
    • Click on the “Next” button to continue.
  13. The system may now take a few minutes while it prepares the installer to install packages for the system.
  14. The About to Install screen should be displayed, hit the “Next” button to begin the installation process. This process involves formatting the file system, transferring the install image to harddisk and installing the various packages.

  15. Once all the packages have been installed, the machine will need to be rebooted and a final configuration of user accounts will be required. It will firstly ask you to remove the CD/DVD from the CDRom/DVDRom Drive, Once the CD has been removed, click on the “Reboot” button to reboot the machine.

Including any firewall settings may introduce complications into some of the Access Grid software. For those who are security conscience and would like to enable a firewall, an entire section is dedicated to enabling a firewall, whilst getting all of the AG software to work later in section “Security” of this guide.
  19. If disabled is selected, a warning box will appear. Hit the “Yes” button to continue.
  20. The SELinux selection screen should now be displayed, select the correct SELinux setting, in our case “Disabled” will suffice, as using SELinux may also introduce problems to your AG install (Particularly if you use the Nvidia drivers). If disabled is selected, an information box will appear. Hit the “Yes” button to continue.
  21. The Hardware Profile Screen should now be displayed. Simply click on the “Forward” button to continue. If you wish, of course, you are welcome to choose to send you hardware profile to the Fedora Project.
  22. The User Account screen should now be displayed. You will be required to enter the following details for user of the computer:
    • Username (eg “ag”)
    • FullName (eg Rockhampton Access Grid)
    • Password (xxxxxx)
    • Confirm Password (xxxxxx)
